No. 3450

from adrift by Benguela

/

about

Nicknamed 'The Red Devil', No. 3450 was a steam locomotive that ran the Cape Town/De Aar/Kimberly line, that was modified by engineer David Wardale in an attempt to save steam in South Africa by improving performance and efficiency. The Red Devil kicked ass, but Wardale's work was ultimately in vain, as SAR management had already decided to go electric.
